The Return of the Choker

The Return of the Choker

The fashion world is known to always recycle early trends and influences. A few years ago we would not dare to wear high-waist jeans or crop tops. Maybe, only to make a statement at a 90's themed throwback party but not on a day to day basis. Now, they're a MAJOR everyday must have. Crop tops and high-waist jeans aren't the only trend coming back from the 90s. 2016 is the year of the Return of the Choker. No more searching garage sales, thrift stores, and your grandmas old jewelry; chokers are now every where and apart of every day fashion.

The Secret and Not So Secret History of the Choker

Chokers were not just worn in the 90s. Choker's were apart of history way before, starting in Ancient Egypt. Worn for protection of the neck and power.

1798 - French Revolution

Red ribbons were worn around necks to pay homage to those who died at Guillotine.

1860s - Uniform of prostitution

Manet's painting "Olympia" is said to be the earliest evidence of prostitution
1874 - Ballerinas and fashionable women

Late 1800s - Royal trend
Chokers were upscale for the elite.
Alexandra, Princess of Wale.
It was said (not proven) that she wore a choker to cover up a scar on her neck.

1944 - Reviving the trend as in "Life Magazine"

Mid-90s - Gothic take over

Late 90s - dies off

And NOW...

Chokers are now found literally everywhere. Everyone is wearing them. They're apart of outfits in huge fashion shows. And now they're even made into dresses, shirts, jumpsuit, and everything else.

So ladies, now that you see that chokers are actually back in style, go out and buy one! Say goodbye to the 90’s chokers. It’s time for the twenty-first century chokers! It’ll definitely add a little more spark to your everyday outfits.
