School, work, children..Oh my!

College parents are the embodiment of the saying "I'll sleep when I'm dead."

We all know that sleep is very important, but when you work overnight, have a growing two-year-old, and enrolled in 15 credit hours in college, what's sleep?

It can be hard to juggle so many things and still stay afloat, but I'm here to let you know that it is not impossible. There are many resources and tips available to help make things easier. With the Spring 2017 semester quickly approaching it's best to be as prepared as you can.

Weighing Your Options

Many colleges and universities offer online courses and some offer evening and/or weekend classes to give options to accommodate a busy and changing schedule.

Tips for Moms Returning to College

Setting Up Goals

Putting a plan or timeline in place will help you stay on track without rushing or becoming overloaded.

Learn not to overextend yourself.  If you only will have time to take 12 credit hours or less, don't panic, time will go by faster than you think.  Remember, summer courses and 8-week courses are usually an option.

Organize

Talk with your manager, speak with advisers, make sure your scheduling what's best for you.

Family and sleep are two things you can not neglect, so do not forget to leave open time for them.

Support from Family and Friends

Everyone needs a support system.  Have people there to motivate you, tell you they're proud of you and to never give up.

Have someone to call on if you need to study, work a strange shift, or just need to rest or have a day of relaxation.

Find and Use Available Resources

There are grants, loans and scholarships available for parents returning to school.

Find options for day/night care centers to assist with your child/ren.

Study groups, workshops and counselors are all resources there to help you on your journey.

No one is saying it will be easy, but nothing can stop a determined parent willing to sacrifice so much, even sleep to ensure their family has promising future. Never give up!
