I lived in Colombia for five years, so I learned to love and respect its culture. It's a country that one automatically falls in love with the minute one gets off the plane. The streets are full of color, and everything to Colombians is one big party. In my opinion, Colombia is probably the happiest country in the world.
I was lucky enough to get to know Colombia on a touristic level, but also I got to know Colombia in a personal level. There I met three of my closest friends and the memories I have of living there are truly unforgettable. But, since you will probably just visit and not stay for five years like I did, I have laid out some of the places you must see and do when in Colombia.
Things To See and Do in Colombia
Stay in Bogotá - When in Colombia, you have to go to its most important city, Bogotá. This was the city that welcomed me and that I called home for five years. I didn't have to try very hard to adapt because Bogotá is very similar to Mexico City. When in this city, make sure you make time to just walk around. You will find amazing people an amazing views since Bogotá is full of skyscrapers, churches, cafés and museums. I would also recommend to go to Museo del Oro which is a museum that has one of the largest collection of gold in the world.
Try The Coffee - Colombia is well known for having one of the most delicious coffee in the world, and I agree. Make sure you stop by a local coffee shop and try it! Starbucks is nothing compared to Colombian coffee.
Visit Cartagena - Cartagena is the prettiest city Colombia has. There is just something that makes you fall in love with it almost instantly. This city is a very popular beach destination. It is also the place that Gabriel Garcia Marquez fell in love with and wrote so much about, so you can imagine just how beautiful it is in Cartagena.
Go to Barranquilla - If you are looking for a great party, go to Barranquilla in February since Barranquilla hosts the second largest carnival in the world! Make sure that when you go, you wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty because you will more than likely get splashed with flour, paint and foam. Barranquilla is the city you go to if you are looking to have a great time.
Colombia is amazing, its colorful and its people are the friendliest most happy people I have ever met. You have to go see it for yourself because words aren't enough to describe the beautiful and happy feeling you get when you are in Colombia. The crime and drugs are just a small portion of what Colombia really has to offer. When you are there, you forget about all problems and you just live!
