Buying Black

Not a moment but a movement

As lights are being shed on police brutality and injustices in the Black community, protests and boycotts are used to demand change.

The Buy Black movement encourages African American consumers to spend with African American businesses.

The holidays are here and days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday are very important to major companies. Along with heavy consumer spending days, the holidays prompt boycotts and a cry for justice, yet again.

The #BuyBlack Hashtag on Twitter continues to trend and strengthen the organization.  Participants in the Buy Black movement will boycott spending money with major corporations like Walmart for the holidays, and instead spend with Black business owners.  The goal is to circulate the dollar throughout the African American community as many times as possible .

The mission of this movement is inspired by the works and visions of the late Marcus Garvey. Garvey recognized the lack of ownership and unity in the Black community and desired to change that. Economic success would be the best way.

Websites and apps provide a variety of ways to reach these companies. Some businesses have physical store locations while others provide te option to order online.

We Buy Black is the largest online marketplace for Black owned businesses. The site includes clothing, jewelry, toys and more from more than 1200 vendors.

The intention of this movement is not to promote segregation from non-Black businesses but to increase unity within the Black community with Black businesses. Places like China-Town in large cities provide an example of cultured communities. The Buy Black movement looks to communities such as Black Wall Street which once thrived in success, to provide hope and inspiration to the Black community that it can be done again.
