Holiday In The City: It's A Wrap

Happy Holidays!

I hope you all enjoy your holiday! We now have time to enjoy family, friends and relax. I still cannot believe it's almost Christmas, or the fact that 2017 is a few weeks away. Do you have any plans? I do, and they're amazing. I plan to wrap up the New Year nicely and I hope you do as well.

We've all had a 2016 to remember but just like you, I'm anxious and excited for a new year. I hope I shared some fun and thoughtful ideas with you, and some that caught your attention.

Goodbye 2016. Hello 2017!

Holiday In The City: Adult Fun, Maybe (hehe)

Adult Fun? Yes Please...

Yes, it's the holiday season and I love that us young adults can make our own fun. From ugly sweater Christmas parties, to potlucks, to just a fun night of making drinks and drinking eggnog or hot chocolate (with a hint of something else).

Who doesn't love an ugly sweater Christmas party? I sure love them! People get creative and it's hilarious. Music going, warm drinks going around, and being surrounded by great people. I love it! This year it's become a really big deal, which is amazing. What's even more amazing is seeing young adults really being involved in the fun.

Then you have potlucks. Whoever came up with these are completely amazing! It's such a stress reliever when everyone just brings something and the pressure of "what to cook" isn't on the host. Potlucks have been my favorite since last holiday season. This is an easy, last minute, fun idea to do with friends as well if you just want to throw something with a bunch of friends. Seeing I can't cook, wine will have to do (hehe).

Holiday In The City: Fun Times

Did Someone Say "Fun"?

Around this holiday season, so many people are wondering what to do with their loved one or what to get them for Christmas. Everyone is so different, it can be very hard. Some people want major gifts, some just want to relax, and some just want to enjoy sports and family time. I wouldn't mind doing all three, but this isn't about me. It's about me helping you with ideas (hehe).

It's football season, and if you're a Kansas City native, the love for the Chiefs runs deep. The Chiefs will be playing at our home stadium on Christmas Day. Exciting right? I cannot wait! We're one step away from making the playoffs. So the goal is to win this game. Yes, I know it's freezing outside but if you're into sports heavy, wanting to have fun with friends and family at a live football game, might I add with drinks. You may want to look into this major event.

Known for it's wonderful family attractions, Crown Center is a beautiful showcase for some amazing shopping in KC, including Halls Kansas City and Function Junction. Paired with stunning lighting and colorful decorations, there's no better place to find holiday cheer during your gift getting. The Legends Outlets Kansas City, which features big-name retailers, is perfect for gift-giving. And I cannot forget the Country Club Plaza. High-end shops and others with plenty of other local fun. The West Bottoms is a great place to find pre-owned and vintage goods. I'm sure there are so many great sales going on now too!

Holiday In The City: Kid Friendly

Kid Friendly Fun for the Holidays!

Though there are some fun things to do this holiday season, some things are not kid friendly. But don't worry, I'm here to save the day and let you know that there are some amazing kid friendly events for this holiday season.

All kids love the movie, Polar Express (I for sure love it). Well, guess what? There's a Polar Express Family Story Time coming up. This is taking place December 18th, starting at  6:30pm at Ceramic Cafe. They will be reading The Polar Express and kids are able to paint a Believe plaque (what the kids did in the movie). Its FREE, and you receive four ornaments to paint. It only cost $30. I surely think this is a great deal.

Then you have an event called Kids in the Kitchen - Holiday Cookies. The kids learn the basics of baking and decorating holiday cookies. They also cover food safety, basics cooking skills and nutrition. This event is suitable for kids ranging from ages 7-12. Taking place on December 19th from 10am-noon, at Johnson County K-State Research and Extension. You must register so look at their website: http://www.johnson.ksu.edu.

There's some amazing events taking place this holiday season for kids. It's just a matter of doing the research. I have you to a good start! : )

Holiday in The City: Holiday Shows

Holiday Shows, You Can't Go Wrong

There are so many different holiday shows going on in Kansas City. And the most exciting thing about that is majority of them run all the way until Christmas Eve. Below I've listed three different holiday shows for you to choose from:

1.  A Christmas Carol: November 20th- December 24th at Spencer Theatre, 4949 Cherry Street, KCMO. The show starts at 8:00pm and runs until 10:00pm. Prices starting at $29.

This is the 35th season of A Christmas Carol. Amazing sets, ornate costumes and spectacular special effects will transport the entire family into the tale of the grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge.

2. THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER: November 24th- December 26th at H&R Block City Stage, Union Station, 30 W Pershing Road, KCMO. Prices starting at $10 for individual or $5.50 group of 15 or more. The Herdman kids are a rough and tumble bunch who create mayhem wherever they go. A mom struggling to produce the church's annual Christmas pageant is forced to cast the Herdman children, who have never even heard of the Christmas story. Their outrageous interpretations leave a lot of the church folk aghast.

3. Crown Center Holiday Choirs: November 30th- December 17th at Crown Center Shops, starting at 3:45pm. And guess what? It's FREE. Beautiful music fills the halls of Crown Center, as more than 130 area school, church and community choirs perform throughout the holiday season.

There are so many more options! I hope this will help you to start off with! : )

Holiday in the City: Ice Skating

Holiday in the City: Kansas City Edition

It's Christmas time! I don't know about you, but I'm super excited. Christmas is my all time favorite holiday season. From hot chocolate, warm winter candle scents, and bright Christmas lights, I can't get enough.

For the holiday season in Kansas City, there is tons to do. The city's festive displays range from famous annual classics like the 86th Annual Plaza Lights to newer traditions like the Northern Lights at Zona Rosa. So if you're wondering what there is to do in Kansas City, don't worry I'll help you out!

Crown Center: Ice Skating!

Who doesn't love ice skating? This is such a good time, especially when you're with great people. Crown Center itself is just gorgeous for the holiday season, and the ice skating rink adds so much more to it. You'll definitely work up an appetite, but don't worry there are many different restaurants to choose from at Crown Center. Ice skating at Crown Center is very inexpensive, oh and they serve hot chocolate throughout your ice skating experience, (freaking amazing).  Looking for a great date night idea, friend fun, or just something to do? This is something to check out for sure!

How to be a Scientific Millionaire

Want to be a millionaire? Just make a ground breaking discovery in Science, Mathematics, and Technology and you could very well be an overnight millionaire.

The Breakthrough Organization held its 5th Annual Breakthrough Prize Ceremony to honor those who have made significant discoveries in the scientific fields, as well as handing them millions of dollars to show appreciation for their work.

Some of the overnight millionaires include Stephen Elledge and Huda Zoghbi.

Elledge’s research included mapping out the entire DNA damage response pathway, contributing to a better understanding of how disease works in the body.

Zoghbi is a Lebanese medical researcher who solved the mystery of an epidemic neurological disorder in her home country.
Receiving three million each, both Elledge and Zoghbi, became instant millionaires with one of the largest monetary prizes in scientific research.

The events host included superstars like Morgan Freeman and Alicia Keys who used their star power to shine a light on the leaders of scientific research.

The Breakthrough prize is founded and funded by Russian internet guru, Yuri Miller, alongside great innovators like Mark Zuckerberg and Sergey Brin.

“Flynn Out”

The Newly appointed national security advisor Michael G. Flynn, Jr. stepped down with concerns of being a distraction to the administration.
As a part of Trump’s transition team Flynn, Jr.’s partake in tweets and social media post became problematic often consisting of what can be consider racist or conspiracy theories.

One conspiracy in particular for Flynn, Jr. has commented on is “Pizza Gate” where individuals, including YouTuber Alex Jones, have linked Hillary Clinton to a child pedophilia ring.
Flynn, Jr. tweeted about the conspiracy saying until it is falsified it will remain a story [national news] suggesting coincidences between Podesta Emails.

The story is of course unfounded and was started from a fake news websites like The New Nationalist. But these fake stories have led some individuals like Edgar Welch to recently take drastic actions.

Welch recently opened fire at Washington Pizzeria, Comet Ping Pong, in an attempt to save the child from the pedophile ring. Welch only stopped firing after finding out there were no children present.

The spread of fake news and fake news websites is becoming more prevalent on the internet but tend to gain more legitimacy when people in positions of authority latch on to them.

Family Feud: Mother and Daughter “Duke” it Out

Basketball season is in full force as national ranking teams go head to head playing tooth and nail to prove who’s best.
That wholesome competition runs deep in the McCallie family as Duke’s head coach Joanne McCallie goes up against daughter Maddie McCallie a guard for Elon Phoenix.

It will be a game like on other in history because it has never happened before.
Coach McCallie has been with the blue devils since 2006 and two of players have been drafted as first round picks in the WBNA.

Coach McCallie has led Duke’s Women team to eight NCAA tournaments and her honors include National, Conference, and College Coach of the Year.
Maddie has been a star player since high school being a two time first team all-conference selection in basketball and other sports.

Maddie transferred into Elon and graduated in 2016 but continues to pursue a MBA. Her current average consists of 20.5 minutes a game, 3.7 points per game, and 1.9 rebounds.

As fate would have it is time for the student to prove herself to the teacher (even if the teacher is mom), but more than likely Coach McCallie has a good feel of what Maddie is capable of doing on the court as she has to get special permission to attend her daughter’s games.

Lack of Sleep Causing Increase in Motor Vehicle Accidents

Not getting all your beauty sleep can end up costing you more than just looks you could end up risking your life according a research study performed by AAA foundation.
The AAA Foundation has found that missing just one or two hours of sleep can increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents.

Missing out on more than that (four to five hours) can be like driving under the influence of alcohol.
Driving without sleep is called “sleeping impaired” according to study and the research has never been done before but is becoming more important with the recent increase in totaled accidents.
No sleep causes more severe accidents were the car becomes unable to be driven away.

But sleep causes more than just accidents lack of sleep can lead to issues such as motor skill problems, memory loss, and sickness.

Requirements on sleep can range from seven to fifteen hours a day depending on age.

U.S. Department of Education Want More Adult in School by 2020

It is more difficult than ever to compete in the business world on a very limited education even as this is the case there are more than 22 million adults that have low performance levels of basic skills such as mathematics, reading, and writing.

This means a lot of adults in the work force are actually functioning at a deficiency with workers tending to occupy industries such as health, automotive, food service, and manufacturing. In fact 62% of all low-skilled, low performing workers are in these fields.

The U.S. Department of Education‘s Office of Careers, Technical, and Adult Education released a survey that showed that the highest level of these low level performers are White and Hispanic.
The percentage would probably be higher among blacks according but that demographic is thought to have a higher percentage of unemployment.

By 2020 the Department of Education would like to see the number of low skilled workers drop by implementing more adult education programs that focus on the problem areas.
The OCTAE manages nearly two billion dollars in investments on a yearly basis that help to combat the issue in adult education and literacy.

These Programs include tech-prep education as well as working closely with community colleges to provide service adults may need to “up skill” America.

A CEO to Run America?

It is not a secret President Elect, Donald Trump, is a very business minded man and on taking his new position has decided to step down as CEO of the Trump Organization. A recent tweet by Trump stated that “The presidency was far more important task.”

As a result Trump will turnover his day to day operations to members of his family, possibly including Ivanka Trump. President Elect has stake in nearly 500 companies both foreign and domestic, his decision to give up his leadership position in the company is to avoid scandal.

There are no laws to stop the president elect from having businesses, it is only by tradition that past presidents have sold off assets or assigned a blind trust. So, what does that mean for the American citizens?

There is already mention of conflict after an international meeting Trump held with his wife Ivanka, immediately after a picture of Ivanka’s bracelet and where to get it was tweeted out. Many were outraged believing the tweet was sent out by her marketing team to increase sales of the bracelet. Trump’s plan to hand over his company to his kids, who ran his campaign for president could still lead to some very concerning questions.

The Return of the Choker

The Return of the Choker

The fashion world is known to always recycle early trends and influences. A few years ago we would not dare to wear high-waist jeans or crop tops. Maybe, only to make a statement at a 90's themed throwback party but not on a day to day basis. Now, they're a MAJOR everyday must have. Crop tops and high-waist jeans aren't the only trend coming back from the 90s. 2016 is the year of the Return of the Choker. No more searching garage sales, thrift stores, and your grandmas old jewelry; chokers are now every where and apart of every day fashion.

The Secret and Not So Secret History of the Choker

Chokers were not just worn in the 90s. Choker's were apart of history way before, starting in Ancient Egypt. Worn for protection of the neck and power.

1798 - French Revolution

Red ribbons were worn around necks to pay homage to those who died at Guillotine.

1860s - Uniform of prostitution

Manet's painting "Olympia" is said to be the earliest evidence of prostitution
1874 - Ballerinas and fashionable women

Late 1800s - Royal trend
Chokers were upscale for the elite.
Alexandra, Princess of Wale.
It was said (not proven) that she wore a choker to cover up a scar on her neck.

1944 - Reviving the trend as in "Life Magazine"

Mid-90s - Gothic take over

Late 90s - dies off

And NOW...

Chokers are now found literally everywhere. Everyone is wearing them. They're apart of outfits in huge fashion shows. And now they're even made into dresses, shirts, jumpsuit, and everything else.

So ladies, now that you see that chokers are actually back in style, go out and buy one! Say goodbye to the 90’s chokers. It’s time for the twenty-first century chokers! It’ll definitely add a little more spark to your everyday outfits.

6 Ways Social Media Will Ruin Your Relationship

I get it! It's addicting! Everyone is on it. Everyone has it. It's just the "it" THING for our generation.
However, don't allow your addiction to the internet be the reason you become disconnected from the one you love. You will ruin your relationship! And here's 6 ways explaining exactly how...

1. FaceTime

Yes, I said it! Instead of interpersonal and intimate and romantic affection, we tend to pick up our phones and video chat with friends, family, and acquaintances instead of actually having that quality intimate time with our significant other. Note: Put down your phone and ask you lover how their day went.

2. #TBT

Social media is the number one search engine to finding someone from the past. Yes, your old #ThrowBack. Communication with old flings from the past can be very dangerous. Majority of the time you don't want your lover to get angry. What you do not realize is that it is better to tell your lover you have connected with a old friend rather than hide it. You hide it and it becomes skeptical. Note: Don't be afraid to be honest and open in your relationship about communicating with others. Especially when a random slides in your DM.

3."She want that old thing back"

The flip to finding your #TBT is that sometimes reconnecting with old flings leads to "other things". One fat ol' love affair. The flirtatious comments, the transition from DM to exchanging phone numbers, then planning to "hang out". Note: Respect both parties, but respect your lover first. Keep it short. Acknowledge your committed relationship and set and stand on boundaries, no matter how urging and tempted it is to know "what if".

4.#RelationshipGoals

One of the MAJOR downfalls of our generations relationships is comparison. We see celebrity relationships on social media trending for some of the wrong reasons. We tend to idolize these figures and compare our reality with theirs. We start looking for trending traits in others in our own relationships, when in reality everyone isn't the same. We become lost when the #PowerCouple we idolized breaks up.

5. "It goes down in the DM"

First off, the new feature of "DM'ing" someone makes social skills weak. We're so confident in "shooting our jumper" when we don't have to physically face the person. Then when we do our conversation sucks and again we're all in our phone. Second, in a relationship what is the purpose of a DM? If someone can't write you under a post/picture clearly they don't have your number which is probably for a reason. Three, what exactly are those messages saying? Note: Don't be stupid! Let them DMs collect dust!

6. 😍 under your pictures

Emojis have turned social media all the way up. And the thing is you can't control what other people comment. However, I guarantee you that if your lover see's this under your picture or post....you are in deep trouble.

Tyrese explains relationships and social media very well on his Facebook post. Now that you know these 6 reasons...help yourself out. Don't let social media ruin what could be forever.
