The U.S. is one of the most diverse countries in the world. English is the primary language and Spanish comes second. Lately, Spanish music has been evolving throughout the nation. For years there have been artists like Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Mark Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias, that have had their music played on American radios. Some of their hits have hit the Billboard charts, but were not as greatly recognized like we have seen this year. The summer jam of 2017, “Despacito” featuring Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, and Justin Bieber, hit number 1 for 16 weeks straight. This music has been around for years now, but it is now being introduced to the nation, and people are loving it.
A famous reggaeton artist known as J. Balvin came out with a song called “Mi Gente” back in June. The song was on Billboard’s Top 10. Recently, a version featuring Beyonce was released. It hit number 3 on the top 100 charts last week.
An upcoming Dominican rapper, named Cardi B, hit number 1 this year with her song “Bodak Yellow”. Cardi B released a Spanish version of the song and got 3.6 million views. Latin rap music is rising and Cardi plays a part to help introduce it. The hit remained on the charts at number 1 for three consecutive weeks. It also gave Cardi her first BET award.
Artists like Shakira and Enrique Iglesias helped develop the music in America. It is now making a huge sweep across the nation. A lot of people enjoy what has been heard so far. It is important for such diversity in music since the country is based off different cultures, many being from Latin America.
Latinos in America created the fan base for this music and that is now expanding to others of different backgrounds. With continuous support, it can change the ways of music in the United States. It will only continue to grow from here and give Latinos recognition in music.
