Filmmaking is a business that was, in the beginning, notorious
for keeping men the central focus while women were very 2 dimensional in their
story. While we unfortunately can’t banish every movie that goes against our
gender equality standards, we have come up with an easy system to inform the
public of a movie’s storyline quality. This system is called the Bechdel test!
Becoming increasingly popular for the film scene in the
2000s, this theory allowed the audience of a movie to determine if the
storyline is women inclusive, based off the answers to these 3 questions:
1. Does the movie has 2 or more women in it?
2. Do the women talk to each other?
3. Do they talk about something besides a man?
While there are
still movies with little to no gender equality, studies have shown that movies
that pass the Bechdel test make an average gross profit of $4.22 billion, while
movies that don’t pass gain a grossing average of $2.66 billion.
For example, while
movies such as The Heat (2013) and We’re the Millers
(2013) have made profits as high as $160 million, Movies such as This
is The End (2013) and Olympus has Fallen (2013) only
grossed around $90 million.
So ladies and gentlemen, if you ever wonder how well a film
does when helping out the cause of the lack of women’s perspective, just ask if
the film passed the Bechdel test! And as these movie standards become more and
more popular, Hollywood will have to abide by the rules for once.
