Chiefs' Meltdown to .500

Football is a complicated sport. Most people don’t see it that way. Fans expect ever year that their team is going to go out and win every game, winning my 40 points, triumphantly walking into the Super Bowl and claiming the well-deserved Lombardi Trophy for the fans of their city.

Tom Brady
Football is a complicated sport. Most people don’t see it that way. Kansas City was eclectic with excitement throughout the first five weeks of the NFL season as the Chiefs handed two of the NFL’s best teams, the Patriots and Eagles, losses and remained the last undefeated team and looked untouchable.

Carson Wentz
Football is a complicated sport. Most people don’t see it that way. Kansas City is scratching their heads at how the same team that dominated weeks one through five, then went one and six since.

Football is a complicated sport. It’s is a long, tough game both mentally and physically. Practices have been designed similarly to military training for a reason, to get players into a solders mindset. Players are expected to block out the outside world, to focus on the game.

The game itself is simple. It’s a game about misdirection and deception. It’s a game about power and strength. But it’s also a game about geometry and physics. It’s calculating risk and assessing scenarios quickly. It’s a quest for perfection in every play.

Earl Thomas
The issue with the Chiefs has nothing to do with offense. It comes down to the type of players the Chiefs have on their team, and the lack of on field leadership on the field.

Eric Berry
Sean Taylor
The first major issue is no Eric Berry. The Chiefs have been blessed with one of the greats and they’ve been able to lean on him for quite some time. Berry, similar to Earl Thomas out of Seattle, and NFL great Sean Taylor, can take up so much of the field that players have to cover less ground. Now with more field to cover, players are becoming more exhausted faster and other offenses can continue to score more. When every game is a race to 30 points, a team is bound to lose more as the season progresses.

The other issue is character and composure. Although players like Marcus Peters are great talents, the lack of composure has plagued the Chiefs on and off the field. With a lack of depth on the defense, the Chiefs are left with few options. As the season continues to progress, watch more players being replaced by injury and lack of production with younger players. The struggle to stop offenses will continue to plague the Chiefs. A lot of offseason work needs to be done to add more talent, but for this year, it’s going to continue to be a struggle.
